We had a great day out

At
our last Noggin March, some wag said “well
what are we doing for Drive-it-Day”? After
much discussion it was decided we ought make the
effort and take our cars out for a run. Brian Spence
said” Why not meet by the Monument at Ashridge”?
So it was agreed that we would meet there at 12
noon and have a picnic.
It was not long before cars started to arrive, and
we had to move to a new spot, so that we could all
be together and so they kept coming. In the end
we had 15 vintage cars and 2 in moderns. As you
can see from the pictures we had a varied group
of cars. The object of the event was achieved, in
that, as soon as we had parked the cars a crowd
of people gathered and were extremely complimentary
about the cars and took great interest.
Everybody enjoyed this very low key event and I
am sure it will be repeated on the next Drive-it-Day
in April 2009. Doug Townsend.

of 4 buses from the plus 4 cars, (3 almost hidden
behind the buses), parked near Lowestoft on Drive
it Day 2008.
East Anglia Transport Museum is a working museum
of buses, trams and trolley buses at Carlton Colville
near Lowestoft. Two of the cars are also on display
in the museum. See www.eatm.org.uk for details.
We left the museum for a short trip around Lowestoft
and were able to return to Carlton Colville prior
to the museum opening at 11.00am. The photograph
was taken at (almost), the most easterly point of
the British Isles on a dull, cloudy morning. The
sun came out later in the day! Philip Mitchell

Our four runs
in Cornwall and Devon were reasonably succcessful
given the poor weather forecast for the south-west
over the weekend.
The three runs in East Cornwall, North and South
Devon attracted 23 cars of which five were Austin
Tens and Twelves whose owners had accepted our invitation
to come along for the day.
There were also 18 Austin Sevens, the oldest being
first registered in March 1925 and is probably the
oldest 'Chummy' or more properly known as an AC
Tourer, on the road in this part of the world.
Our run in the west Cornwall brought out ten of
our members, one of whom was driving his 1936/7
Austin Heavy Twelve ex-London Taxi which he completely
restored himself. Every time we stopped were soon
surrounded by inquisitive folk, and children were
delighted to be invited to sit in the driver's seat
for a photo opportunity.
We are happy with the day, a similar turn out in
number of cars to last year. Now we shall start
thinking about venues for next year's 'Drive it
Day' - 26 April 2009.

A picture here
taken at the Vauxhall Heritage Centre for the southern
area members' contribution.
The yellow P-reg Cavalier is the oldest known example,
dating from just a couple of weeks into production.
The red X-reg is one of the very last - production
had officially ceased at W-reg, but cars that lingered
in the showroom received an "X" plate,
like the FWD Mk 2 Cavalier that replaced them.

The morning of Sunday
20th April turned out to be rather nice, and having
stayed at Paul Macs the night before, we travelled
in on Great Western Road to Esquire House to meet
up with the 'Glasgow band'.
We were due to meet up and head off about 09:45,
and joining us for the first part of the drive to
Ayr was Alan Duncan in his Toyota Celica, along
with a pal in an MX5. Keith G in D77 was the third
Capri, while Gary H had turned out, not only with
his current ’69 Mustang 351 sportsroof, but
also accompanied by a chap called Liam, driving
his previous ’67 Mustang 289 Fastback.

Drive It Day |

The full report on
this event can be found HERE
- it concludes as below
As people arrived at the completion
of their run there were amusing tales of experiences
during the run – missed turnings –
passing others going the opposite way! –
telling tales of places that I did not recognise
were on the run instructions!? - and generally
the enjoyment that people had had.
The arrangements with the
Cosford Organisation and the support provided
by them was excellent and, as someone said, the
Museum displays were the “icing on the cake”
completing a rewarding day out and as a bonus
we raised £60 for the Newport X-Ray Appeal

This has to be
the farthest north Drive It Day up in the Highlands
of Scotland sent in by Callum Beveridge. About 24
cars from all over the Highlands met up in Inverness
followed by a procession through the town and a
route through the Black Isle to a country pub.

The re-enactment
of the original horse drawn carriage 39 mile route
was organised by Jim Barry and was timed to coincide
with the Federation of British Historic Vehicle
Club’s and Kettering Area Motor Club’s
‘Drive it Day’. Regrettably Jim’s
Lomax suffered a brake problem en route to Quenby
Hall which resulted in the car having to be transported
home. Fortunately Joy had the Deux Chevaux and they
were able to take part and complete the route.
