Maryfield Transformation: Dundee Museum of Transport raises a further £1.5m

Published: 02/02/2026

We are delighted to share a major update on the future of the Dundee Museum of Transport. The long journey to transform the historic Maryfield Tram Depot into the museum’s permanent home has taken a significant step forward following confirmation of a major funding boost.

A total of £2.7 million, including a new £1.5 million that has now been secured from the UK Government through Dundee’s Community Regeneration Partnership.

This sits alongside £1 million previously awarded through the Scottish Government’s Regeneration Capital Grant Fund, bringing confirmed public funding for the project to £3.7 million.

This funding means refurbishment work can now begin at the former Maryfield Tram Depot on Forfar Road. The project has reached the stage where a main contractor can be appointed, allowing restoration, conservation and fit-out works to get underway in the historic 1901 and 1913 sections of the building. These areas will form the heart of the new museum.

The works are expected to take around 12 months to complete and will deliver a building ready to welcome visitors. Development of the wider site will continue in stages, allowing the museum to grow sustainably over time.

The museum has been based at Market Mews since 2014, operating from temporary premises while plans for a permanent home were developed. Maryfield will finally provide the space, setting and facilities needed to showcase Dundee’s transport heritage on a much larger scale.

Alongside this funding, the museum will continue its fundraising efforts to support later phases of the project. These include landscaping, the creation of a new permanent exhibition, and the restoration of the 1920 section of the building. Subject to continued fundraising success, the museum is working towards opening its new home in the first half of 2027.
