VSCC Mallory Park is a roaring success

Published: 25/08/2021

The Vintage Sports-Car Club hosted the Bob Gerard Memorial Trophy Meeting at Mallory Park on Sunday 23 August with over 150 competitors taking part in 11 races over the day.

The Edwardian Handicap Race for the Dick Baddiley and Edwardian Racing Trophies was highly-anticipated and delivered a fantastic performance with the Dick Baddiley Memorial Trophy being awarded to Andrew Howe-Davies in his 1911 Scat Racer who finished just 0.11 seconds ahead of Jeremy ‘Flangio’ Flann in his Curtiss Le Zebre.

The VSCC Young Members race was also a handicap format which saw Harry Painter triumphant in his MG PA, pipping Henry Lees in the family Austin 7 to the chequered flag by just 3 seconds after overtaking him in the final corner. Harry’s brother, James, rounded out the top three in his MG Kayne.

The Boulogne Trophy Race for Vintage Racing Cars & Allcomers Scratch Race was won by Sandford Andrew in his Morgan Aero who knew he had a distinct advantage in the wet and used it to his full advantage, streaking away from experienced Club racer, Patrick Blakeney Edwards. Spectators were also treated as the iconic GN Spider, famed in hillclimbing circles, returned to circuit racing for the first time since the 70s. Now owned by another Young Member, Jim Edwards, it was a masterful performance in the wet, with Jim climbing from 11th to finish fourth after a real humdinger of a battle with Justin Maeers in his GN Parker. Reports were the crowd were cheering the young pilot on as he harried Justin at every corner. It was not to be as he eventually finished just 0.6 seconds behind but won the hearts and minds of those who braved the rain in the last few races.

The day featured a grid walk of the cars assembled for the first race celebrating the Alvis Centenary which was won by Alex Simpson in his handsome Alvis Goodwin Special. The Alvis Owners Club provided a display overlooking the Start/Finish straight perfectly complimenting a fantastic day’s racing.
