North West club hits 1,000 members and still growing!

Published: 30/08/2023

Celebrating a centenary of motorsport,  Wigton Motor Club now has 1,000 members and is still growing.

Formed as the Wigton and District Motor Cycle and Car Club in 1923, since then the Wigton Motor Club - a member of the Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs - has progressed and developed. Of its membership, just under 10% run historic cars.

It celebrated its centenary at the Cumbria Classic and Motor Sport Show at Dalemain where over 800 cars were on display.

The 34th Cumbria Classic & Motorsport Show organised by Wigton Motor Club once again was a superb event with over 800 cars on display in warm and sunny weather in the tranquil surroundings of the Dalemain parkland.

The show was celebrating the centenary of the Wigton Motor Club and well as 100 years of MG and Triumph and there were fantastic displays of both marques.

The grass autotest was held under the Motor Sport UK’s Street car banner drew plenty of interest and some 50 new members signed up to the club.  One of the other highlights was the firing up of the 1956 Cooper F3 V twin that won the British Hill Climb Championship in 1948, 59 and 1960 and is now owned by Fred Bell. Also on display was a current Ford Puma WRC car provided by Malcolm Wilson.

The Car of the Show was voted to be the Saab 92 of Ken Dover from Keswick.

The Show supports the two charities that the Club choses each year, in this case Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team and the Air Ambulance.

The Cumbria Classic Weekend started on the Saturday with the Rose & Thistle Tour which saw 75 cars exploring the Borders and north Pennines.

Over 60 new memberships were taken at the show and afterwards and a few days ago membership secretary John Sloan announced that the membership for 2023 had reached 1,000 with four months to go!

Two years ago the Club opened its headquarters, the Motor House, near Cockermouth in north Cumbria. There are monthly Cars & Coffee meets there on the second Sunday of each month.
