Pink Floyd star throws support behind NSPCC and Drive it Day

Published: 29/03/2023

Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason will be the NSPCC Ambassador for this year's Drive It Day, which will see proceeds go towards Childline.

Classic car enthusiasts can join the Federation of British Vehicle Clubs (FBHVC) in a day of events up and down the country for this year's event on Sunday, April 23rd.

National Drive It Day was created by the FBHVC in 2005 as a chance for historic vehicle enthusiasts and the public to celebrate the One Thousand Mile Trial, which was originally organised in 1900 to prove the viability of then new motor vehicles.

Sales of FBHVC's Childline Rally Plates will go towards the NSPCC-run service. Drive It Day has raised nearly £90,000 for the NSPCC and Childline over the past 2 years.

Nick Mason has sold millions of records and toured the world as drummer of English prog rock band Pink Floyd. The group is a household name and behind bestselling albums such as The Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here and The Wall.

But aside from being the only constant member of the band throughout their decades' long career, Nick is also a classic car enthusiast.

He said: "I am incredibly excited to be involved in this year's Drive It Day. It's a great event - especially for those, like me, who love motorsports and vintage cars."

"Drive It Day always raises an amazing amount of money for the charity and it is my hope that we can get even more this year."

Visitors can get into the spirit of the vintage atmosphere by dressing in the style of the early 20th-century for a 'Dress of the Era' competition.

Other activities on the day will include:

  • Car Rally and Ride Out
  • Sponsored Hill Climbs, Time Trials and Treasure Hunts
  • A Memorabilia auction

Michele Baxter NSPCC Fundraising Manager said "Last year alone, Drive It Day raised
£47,000 for Childline, our free counselling service for children and young people, through Club support and Rally Plate sales."

"We are delighted that the FBHVC are supporting us again this year, and hope that the partnership continues to grow."

"It is sure to be a fantastic day so I would encourage everyone to get involved."

David Whale, Chairman of the FBHVC, said: "We are delighted to be supporting Childline once again this year and it is great news that Nick Mason has come on board as the NSPCC Ambassador for the event."

"He has a huge passion for historic vehicles and we can't think of a better person to help promote the FBHVC's Drive it Day. With his involvement, we are sure even more people will come out to enjoy themselves on April 23rd and help raise funds for this vital service for children."
